Erectile dysfunction - What does it mean?

Erectile dysfunction is the inability of a man to achieve an erection and/or hold an erection enough for his sexual needs or the requirement of his copartner. ED is often called as impotence. The term "erectile dysfunction" means the inability to get erection, or the ability to achieve erection only for a short time. It can occur at any age, but is generally found in men over the age of 60.

Is erectile dysfunction just a part of old age?

Erectile dysfunction is nothing to do with older age. It is true that as you get older, you will need more physical or mental stimulation such as touching and stroking to get an erection. You might also need more time between erections.

What are the causes behind erectile dysfunction?

Erection needs a series of events. Erectile dysfunction occurs when any of the events is disturbed. Nerve impulses in the spinal column, brain, fibrous tissues, arteries in and around the corpora cavernosa, which make the series of events to occur. Injury to smooth muscles, nerves, arteries or fibrous tissue around the penis can result in erectile dysfunction.

Decreased level of testosterone hormone (The primary male hormone): Testosterone is the main male hormone. Around the age of 45, testosterone hormone level gradually falls. Approximately in 10% cases of erectile dysfunction doctors found decline in testosterone level. Decline in testosterone level results in lower sexual interest hence there will no erection.

Erectile dysfunction can also occur in people having following medical problems:

Diabetes

Hypertension

Atherosclerosis

If you are a patient of diabetes and will not control your blood sugar level and blood pressure, you can get erectile dysfunction. That's why it is important to undergo treatment recommended by any health specialist.

Hormonal imbalance can also cause erectile dysfunction and if you feel so, visit an endocrinologist for needed test and treatment. Some medicines can also cause erectile dysfunction as a side effect, let your doctor know about your problem.

Smoking too much, use of alcohol in excess and use of drugs can also result in erectile dysfunction.

Psychological cause:

Conflict in your relations with your female partner can also cause erectile dysfunction. You must try to improve your relations and see your improved relationship is solving your sexual problem or not? Couples must try new ways to please each other and to show love and affection.

Treatment of erectile dysfunction:

First of all one should visit an urologist for proper diagnosis and treatment. Visit to a psychologist can also be helpful in erectile dysfunction.
